MEET THE TEAM: ROB LOCKYER

Rob Lockyer is a Systems Engineer and joined the Avalon Holographics team in 2015.

In his role, Rob coordinates the teams responsible for turning abstract ideas and concepts into real holographic images that can be shown on our light field displays. This involves developing rendering algorithms, software architecture, and APIs. We've crafted software which rapidly turns 3D models into holographic images, resulting in an interactive experience like playing a video game. We’re also upgrading well known tools to carry the industry forward into the holographic era.

“I GET TO WORK WITH A LOT OF INTELLIGENT PEOPLE ON DIFFICULT PROBLEMS THAT MOST OF THE INDUSTRY IS AFRAID TO TACKLE. I also get to work with bleeding edge graphics APIs and techniques, and use computer hardware most gamers would drool over.”

Rob’s earliest memories of 3D technology were playing "Mario Tennis" on a Nintendo: Virtual Boy at Blockbuster and playing "Mechwarrior" on his 3DFX Voodoo Graphics GPU. Later, while in high school he and a friend competed in the Skills Canada 3D animation competitions and despite knowing almost nothing about 3D animation it sparked a passion that has led to a meaningful career in holographics.

“I wanted to work on something challenging and this definitely fit the bill! now we're seeing the results of our work on a real light field display and it's incredible to be a part of that. Very few people have witnessed this technology in action and I'm excited to get our displays in front of people so they can start imagining all the different applications that we haven't even dreamed of ourselves.”

In his spare time, it’s no surprise that Rob loves video games and is also a huge fan of board games, hiking, and biking.
